Meet The Circle: Eva Goicochea

Here at SquareStudio we are big fans of The Circle - Squarespace's community of professionals who build websites for clients. We are going to be conducting a series of interviews with members to showcase some of their incredible design work.

In our first instalment we caught up with New York-based web designer Eva Goicochea - founder of eg° studio - for a chat about all things Squarespace.

Two of the websites Eva has designed are up for nomination at Square Studio Awards; eg° studio and also RoomForty. She was recently invited by Squarespace to share her expertise on client management tools at The Circle meet up in New York.

A BIG PART OF YOUR CLIENT BASE IS FASHION. WHAT FIRST INTERESTED YOU IN BUILDING WEBSITES FOR CLOTHING BRANDS?

I went to the Fashion Institute of Technology to study Advertising & Marketing Communications. Cut to 12 years later, when I was hired as one of the first employees at Everlane running social media. I loved their innovative approach to selling directly online. Last year, I co-founded Tinker Watches which is also online-only and because we're a small team, we all have to be well-versed every area of the business. Because of these experiences, I think I provide a well-rounded approach to building a brand online especially in the fashion industry.

HOW DID YOU FEEL THE NEW YORK CIRCLE MEET UP WENT?

While I liked speaking, I prefer to teach workshops and interact with the audience so that everyone gets the most that they can from the experience. Additionally, I was curious to hear about other people's experiences working with clients.

YOU PROVIDE A COURSE ON YOUR WEBSITE; 'I LOVE CREATIVES' TO TEACH CUSTOMERS HOW TO BUILD THEIR BRANDS. HAS THIS BEEN SUCCESSFUL AND ARE YOU THINKING ABOUT PROVIDING MORE COURSES LIKE THIS?

Yes! It's gone really well as I think it's a digestible, easy-to-understand course that allows you to go at your own pace while constructing the framework for your brand book. I'd love to teach it in person more in New York, but I have to find the right space and partner as I don't keep my own outreach list.

YOUR WEBSITES CONTAIN A LOT OF PHOTOGRAPHIC CONTENT, HOW IMPORTANT DO YOU THINK IT IS FOR WEBSITES TO BE VISUALLY ENGAGING?

Very. People seem to remember imagery more than text and what I say over and over to clients is that you must be "sticky" - that is, easy for the customer or viewer to keep you top of mind.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT BEING PART OF THE CIRCLE?

The community is incredibly helpful in answering questions, whether about coding, clients and everything in-between.

HOW USEFUL, DO YOU FIND SOCIAL MEDIA AS A DIGITAL MARKETING TOOL?

Absolutely, but each channel should be approached differently and you should have a strategy for each.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT WORKING INDEPENDENTLY?

Having control over my own time. I'm a night owl and do my best work when the world is sleeping.

WE HAVE RECENTLY PUBLISHED A BLOG TITLED 'WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN GOING FREELANCE' WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE JUST STARTING UP AS A FREELANCER?

Decide what you want your life to look like: Your schedule, how much you make, etc. and then work backwards. If you have a financial goal, for instance, you can then say I only need this many clients per month.
